Another Gallery Metalworks Feature Project
Marriott Marquis Hotel - Times Square, N.Y.
Pergola in
lobby area-
featuring
All yellow brass materials
Custom casting of side outlet ‘TEES’
On site assembly of brass tubing
Erection of all posts into marble floor |
 |
 |
The Pergola serves as a transitional passageway
and visual decorative breakup within the massive atrium lobby area of the
hotel. It subtly guides guests through the check in /out process and through
the balance of the lobby to public and elevator areas.
THE CHALLENGE
- To erect a massive architectural feature in the FIFTH floor lobby.
- It must be functional and of complimentary DESIGN to the modern
contemporary lobby and huge atrium area.
- Scheduling of Union help, elevator and dock times added to the complicated
logistics.
- Budget for a fully fabricated- pure custom on site welded system would
have been unfathomable.
- Each of the 36 unions (the side outlet TEES at each joining location)
would be a technical, expensive and complicated nightmare to weld, grind,
clean up and polish (by hand) on site.
THE SOLUTIONS
 | System had to be modular (knock down) to
accommodate elevator, trucking and dock service |
 | Each of the 36 unions (side outlet TEES)
were made as custom castings by Gallery Metalworks. Each casting weighed
over 50 pounds |
 | They were then fitted on site into precut
and pre engineered lengths of 1 ½” square brass tube. All material fit in
the elevator. |
 | Standard core drilling and grouting
provided the vertical structure of each leg in the floor. |
 | Standard mechanical fastening devices
(including silicon) erected the complete Pergola. |
 | THE BONUS; Marriott received the exact
unit as per design at a fraction of the budgeted cost. |
 | The time saved was enormous and this
helped the complete project to open on schedule. |
