Another Gallery Metalworks Feature Project
Outdoor Courtyard, Detroit Michigan

Water Fountain Sculpture -
Architectural Bronze- alloy 385, ¼” thick plate
Custom metal dishes
Each dish, 1/4” thick spun to shape, with 1” border lip

Perpetually Cascading Three Stepped Water Fountain Sculpture

Spun metal application, waterproof TIG welding, mechanical fastening, retextured finish, waterproof electrical lighting

THE CHALLENGE

To build a three stage cascading metal waterfall set of large architectural bronze dishes for outdoor use (rust resistant, architecturally correct sculpture, in six separate parts, three dishes, three bases) in our plant and ship to Michigan for on site erection. Fit, sizing, water flow, spacing, levelling, consistent finish and size perspective all had to tie in perfectly on site. Finish had to be such that natural patina could set up evenly over time. Cut-outs and shaping of legs and dishes presented an accuracy problem at time of fabrication.
A perpetual water flow within the three dish system was required.
Each dish had to be bottom/back lit by a waterproof flood light.

THE SOLUTIONS

bullet

Use Architectural Bronze, alloy 385 throughout

bullet

TIG Weld all water flow channels to dishes with continuous welds (waterproof).

bullet

All material then cleaned, buffed and retextured to a continuous brushed finish.

bullet

Three dishes now ready to be mechanically fastened to the three bases. (Accuracy proven by complete dry fit in plant before shipping)

bullet

Use computer control water jet cutting techniques to ensure and establish dead accurate fit of contoured legs into parabolic dish bottoms.

bullet

Mechanical fastened system designed by Gallery Metalworks technicians

bullet

Finish -all brushed finish and texturing in plant allowed proper patina finish on site

bullet

Dishes created by making wooden chuck and using metal spinning techniques to create parabolic dish shape.

bullet

Waterproof lamps installed in base of dishes at Gallery Metalworks’ plant.

bullet

A pump was installed on site (by others) to create a perpetual circulating water flow system within the three dishes.

bullet

All components were shipped to site and fit perfectly.

bullet

The project was on time, on budget
